There are two people who were key in Gmail’s history: Gmail being Google’s webmail service, which is accessible at Gmail.com.
The first key person in Gmail’s history was Rajen Sheth. This was the person who floated the idea of offering webmail to Google. This apparently happened in the course of an interview – and the Google guys, being the sponges for good ideas that they are, opted to take it seriously. Thus, in a way of speaking, Google was a brainchild of Rajen Sheth – even if he isn’t the one who actually developed the system.
The second key person in Gmail’s history was Paul Buchheit. This was the person who was in charge of Gmail’s initial development. Apparently, Paul Buchheit (presumably with his team) worked ‘behind the scenes’ for many years, coding and testing code, before coming up with the Gmail system which was initially only used within the Google fraternity, before being made public.
