internet safetyHow to setup a MySpace Account

Well, of course you want to venture over to MySpace at http://www.MySpace.com.

In the upper right hand corner you will see a link that says "SignUp":

internet safety

internet safetyClick on the SignUp link and you will be taken to a page to fill out personal information. Remember, MySpace is not verifying the information and technically speaking, one may create as many MySpace profile as they wish. This is an important step if you need to use stealth strategies for getting into your child's or your child's friend's MySpace profile (see here for more info).

Fill out the information (email, name, etc) and copy the verification code into the required field:

In the next screens you will be asked to upload photos (optional) and invite people (optional) to become your MySpace friends.

You will want to edit your profile and security settings right away. To enter the edit profile screen from your MySpace page, click the link directly to the right of your main photo that says "Edit Profile." You will see a screen that looks like this:

Notice the tabs along the top (second line of text). The picture above is part of the first tab, "Interests and Personality" - you know this by seeing the title on the first line of text at the top left.

The list of tabs is as follows:

Interest and Personality|Name|Basic Info|Background & Lifestyle|Schools|Companies|Networking|Profile Songs

Most of these tabs are self explanatory optional information. Be sure to read the different child spying strategies to learn about what information your child should and should not post (here).

One tab that is important for the next sections is the second tab, Name. Click the Name tab to fill out your MySpace Display Name.

16 yr. Old Girl Raped By Internet Predator

Important: The Display Name is the name displayed on the MySpace Profile and is typically a nickname like "The Jersey Girl" or "Raider Jeff". This name can be changed whenever you'd like, as often as you'd like. The MySpace user ID# number is unique to each account and will not change.

In the Name screen you will see four lines:

1. MySpace User Name/URL: This is the link to your profile and shows your MySpace User ID# like this: http://www.myspace.com/1234567.

The "1234567" at the end of the web address is your user ID#. You can always find someone or link to someone by using this number. It also acts as your default User Name when you setup an account.

MySpace will ask you to change your User Name to something unique (something nobody else has used). These typically look like email addresses such as JerseyGirl007 or RaiderJeff1988.

As stated earlier, the other tabs are self explanatory personal information. Remember that MySpace is not checking your personal information so multiple personalities and stretching the truth is quite common.

How to Find Anyone's MySpace ID#

Click on anyone's profile (via picture, comment, search, etc) and you'll see this in the web browser's address bar:

Notice the last five digits of the address, "3207768"? That is the Friend ID# for that MySpace user and it will always be their ID and never change. So now lets use the ID to do some other things in MySpace.

How to View All Photos for a MySpace Account

First be sure to be logged into MySpace. Next, have a FriendID# ready for the profile who's picture you want to view. Next, you will type, or copy and paste the url below into your browser's address bar and replace xxxxxxx with the FriendID. Then hit enter or click "go" on your browser.

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=xxxxxxx

This is nothing too advanced and just gives you a direct link to bookmark if you want to get right to the photos with someone's ID. The same works for videos:

How to view All Videos for a MySpace Account

Same as above but use the following link:

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.uservids&friendID=xxxxxxx

But What About Private Profiles?

If you need to see the content of someone's MySpace profile who has made the "Private" selection, you have come to the right place. Read about stealth MySpace spying strategies here.
